100 Flags

We invite you to the exhibition presenting flags prepared as part of the campaign “One hundred flags for the centenary of women’s electoral rights”.

Over 200 artists created flags that on November 24, 2018 became a part of the Marsz 100 FLAG performance!

MARCH OF 100 FLAGS FOR THE CENTENARY OF OBTAINING VOTING RIGHTS BY WOMEN OF POLAND

[See below: THE MANIFESTO OF 100 FLAGS]

START: 24.11.2018, Warsaw, Castle Square, 12:00

We will march with our flags through Krakowskie Przedmieście to the Exhibition Bureau (Krakowskie Przedmieście 16/18), where the following activities are planned:

  • every Creator of the flag will be able to present and describe it,
  • we will present all the flags that we are not able to show during the march due to technical reasons (ie. films, performance, sound),
  • the authors of the New Patriotic Songbook will invite us to sing together (you can practice before marching –  bit.ly/2PKSsUJ )
  • we will do a photographic documentation of your flags (those who will decide not to to leave their flags for exhibition purposes are kindly requested to provide them after the march),
  • we will be provided with a special tea prepared by the irreplaceable Kuba Korczak!
  • we will celebrate our holiday, pay tribute to our great-great-grandmothers and commemorate this wonderful anniversary with a 100-flag surprise that we are preparing for you!

100 FLAGS MANIFESTO

We invite you to celebrate together the 100th anniversary of women’s electoral rights. In Poland, they were granted on November 28, 1918, when the Head of State Józef Piłsudski signed the “Decree on the electoral system for the Constitutional Sejm”.

It would not have happened without the participation of the members of the Central Committee for the Equality of Women, who after Piłsudski’s return from captivity in Magdeburg visited him in his private flat and handed in memorials of the Polish Women’s Congress of 1917, in which they demanded “full civil rights of a Polish woman” .

“In a truly democratic country that Poland is to become, the limitation of civil rights based on sex is a relic and a blatant injustice, especially in view of the broadly drawn draft of the future constitution,” wrote the Women’s Congress delegates in the memorial “To the Most Revived Regency Council” on December 10, 1917. [Budzińska-Tylicka J. ed., „Pamiętnik Zjazdu Kobiet Polskich w Warszawie w roku 1917” (Diary of the Polish Women’s Congress in Warsaw in 1917), Warsaw 1918]

  • If you want to join us and think that it is important to you, then you are simply with us!
  • If you feel that also now, one hundred years after gaining electoral rights by women, our proposals, actions and rights are not respected – you are with us!
  • If you want to celebrate the empowerment and emancipation of women – you are with us!
  • If you agree with the principale of “nothing about us without us” – you are with us!
  • If you think that democracy without women is impossible – then you are with us!

The invitation is addressed to everyone – not just artists, but also to all potentially interested groups, organizations, people.

The name “one hundred flags” is a fairly ironic attempt to conquest the ideas of “one hundred for a century”. It also reminds us of historical facts that are being eliminated from the collective memory, one of them being that women actually have political rights and they should be able to enforce them.

We invite every participant, group or collective to prepare a “flag”, which does not have to be a literal flag. All experiments, ideas for objects, performative activities, films, etc. are most welcome – we count on your creativity and freedom of the imagination. We have no ambition to curate/supervise the project in any way. Our goal is only to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s electoral rights in Poland by organizing a joint march/demo on November 24, 2018, during which we will show our flags together on the streets of Warsaw.

We want it to be a collective, bottom-up action, created by as many people and groups as possible. Of course, the invitation is directed not only to people who want to create flags. We invite you with everything you are capable of to celebrate this anniversary – PR and music, cooking and combing, sculpting and dancing. All this can be a flag for 100 years of women’s rights. For everyone!

If you are in any way interested in designing flags, co-creating and celebrating the anniversary, write to us at: 100flagkobiet@gmail.com

And then we’re going on!
