The View / Józef Gałązka
The View /
mobile sculpture studio + art presentation point
19 September – 29 November 2019
In August 2019, Józek Gałązka travelled Poland with a carriage he designed and made – a mobile workshop, while implementing and presenting his sculptures in it.
The View is a carriage that combines the functions of a mobile sculpture studio and an art presentation point. The form of the studio on wheels is inspired by market stalls and street trade. It refers to the nomadic character of the artist’s work.
Józef Gałązka, inspired by the beautiful forms of hot dog carts, created the first conceptual sketches of the carriage during the artistic residence at Residency Unlimited in New York in 2017, which was funded by the Hestia Artistic Journey Foundation.
The idea of travel arises from the artist’s search for a place to work after finishing the studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. It is also a question about what the contemporary profession of a sculptor is and whether it is still needed. During the trip, Gałązka attempted to confront the vision of the sculptor’s profession with the opinions of people visiting the studio. The artist traveled from the Tatra Mountains to the sea, stopping in places important for Polish identity, in holiday resorts, small towns, museums and galleries and in places known for beautiful natural landscape. Works created during the tour were a commentary or chronicle record of the journey. Presentations of The View in various social contexts resulted in a set of views available in the form of printed postcards and spatial dioramas.
The presentation of The View project will take place during the exhibition of Józef Gałązka in the Exhibition Bureau (Biuro Wystaw) in Warsaw and during the Narrations #11 Festival in Gdańsk, organized by the City Culture Institute and the Gdańsk City Gallery.
